SOUTH PACIFIC AIR PASS FOR EUROPE MARKET Air New Zealand has introduced the South Pacific air pass. It allows clients to fly at fixed prices inside New Zealand, between New Zealand and Australia and between New Zealand and Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island and TONGA. The air pass is only available to clients from Europe and is valid through to April 30 2003. Prices start at 60 Euro for domestic New Zealand flights and end at 199 Euro for flights between New Zealand and South Pacific Islands. "This is an outstanding achievement for Royal Tongan Airlines and the accolades must go to the staff of Royal Tongan Airlines for achieving this target ahead of projection" said Semisi Taumoepeau, CEO Royal Tongan Airlines. Royal Tongan Airlines projected to reach its 50,000 mark by mid October this year after experiencing some schedule difficulties during the first quarter this year. Over the last three months RTA domestic services have experienced a 70 – 80% load factor every week. The strong growth in Domestic has been supported by the increase tourist traffic to Vava'u. Air New Zealand’s manager for the Pacific Islands, John Whittaker, said that the changes are in response to requests from various groups within the travel industry who find the current Tonga-Honolulu service somewhat restrictive with regard to US mainland travel. "Air New Zealand is committed to support inbound tourism in Tonga and, following discussions with inbound tourist operators in Tonga, have decided a direct connection with Los Angeles is preferable to the current connection via Honolulu," he said. Whittaker said the new Los Angeles service will better support tourist traffic from Europe and North America and will connect with Air New Zealand's services to and from London. Air New Zealand will continue to operate its existing four services between Auckland and Tonga and will provide additional capacity for holiday travellers over the Christmas/New Year period. The new equipment includes updated boarding pass printers and the introduction of baggage tag printers. The new equipment which went live on June 9th, has received favourable comments from customers. Passengers travelling from New Zealand to Niue will have to overnight in Nuku'alofa. Travellers heading from Niue back to Auckland will also need to overnight in Tonga. Royal Tongan Airlines will use its Irish-built Shorts 360 turboprop for the 1 hour 20 minutes flight. It will carry a maximum of 20 passengers. Niue has agreed to waive landing fees, provide duty free fuel for the plane and pay a $NZ100 subsidy on empty seats. The Niue Tourism Office has asked for $60,000 from the NZ government to assist with re-positioning Niue in the New Zealand and Australian marketplaces. (Source: PINA Nius Online, via SPTO, June 2001)
